Firewall reconfiguration

Even if you have configured the ports for incoming and outgoing email, the problem may persist. The error can also be caused by a firewall. Windows Firewall doesn’t often block trusted Windows features, but apparently it can from time to time. To make sure that the firewall actually allows Outlook to access the Internet, follow these instructions:

  1. Type firewall in the Windows search box and open Windows Firewall.
  2. In the left pane, click Allow application or feature through Windows Firewall.
  3. Click on the Change settings button.
  4. Now find these 2 processes and enable them for private and public networks: Outlook.exe (for Outlook) Msimn.exe (for Outlook Express).
  5. Then confirm the changes and restart the computer.

Connection test

For obvious reasons, your email client cannot connect to the servers and so you cannot receive or send emails. If your connection is poor and you are sure this is the cause of the error, you should follow the troubleshooting steps below:

  • Restart the router and the modem.
  • Switch to a wired connection instead of a wireless one.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Temporarily disable the proxy server and VPN.
  • Start the Windows troubleshooter.

Once you have a stable connection again, the problem is solved.

Delete your account and add it again

You can try to delete the Outlook account. You can also completely reset the application by going to Settings -> Applications, clicking on Outlook and going to Advanced Settings. Then just press the reset button. Then add your account, configure it and wait for the full sync. That should be enough. We are sure you can solve the Outlook 0042109 error with the suggested solutions.

Change outgoing port

The default setting for the outgoing Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) port is 25. However, it turns out that many ISPs block this port value and you cannot send mail. You have two choices in this scenario:

  1. Change the SMTP value to 26.
  2. Go to the TLS port and select 587.

The second option is a non-standard port value, but it is a proven solution to this problem. Follow these instructions and everything will be fine:

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Choose Tools.
  3. Open the account settings.
  4. Double-click on the email address where the error occurred.
  5. Select Advanced Settings.
  6. Open Advanced.
  7. Set the SMTP port of the outgoing server to 587 and select TLS encryption.
  8. Confirm the selection and check the changes.
