Microsoft has done it again. After releasing major Windows 10 updates every year, they have now started releasing them every month, in the form of cumulative updates. Microsoft said this was a direct result of their recent announcement, that they have perfected the technology that causes Windows 10 to automatically upgrade itself.
Windows 10 has received three cumulative updates since the operating system’s launch. Cumulative updates are a way for Microsoft to share new fixes and features with all users simultaneously. They come in the form of a large patch and are usually installed by default when the computer is restarted. The last cumulative update, Patch Tuesday, was released on May 11, 2021.
It’s Patch Tuesday, so the Redmond-based company is releasing updates for all supported versions of Windows 10. In addition to the stable releases, beta and preview insiders will have access to a brand new 21H1 19043.985 release (KB5003173). Also, today’s set of patches is notable in that it is only being released for Windows 10 versions 2004, 20H2 and 1909, with the latter being the last Tuesday of the patches. This is because Windows 10 version 1909 has reached the end of support.

If you are an Insider in the Beta or Release Preview channel, you will receive build 19043.985 with the following changes.
Security updates for Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Core, Windows Media, Microsoft Scripting Engine, and Windows Silicon Platform.
KB5003173 for Windows 10 version 2004 and 20H2
Users of the stable versions of Windows 10, version 2004 and version 20H2, will receive the update KB5003173, which increases the build number to 19041.985 and 19042.985 respectively. The general change protocol is as follows.
- Security updates for Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Core, Windows Media, Microsoft Scripting Engine, and Windows Silicon Platform.
- This update brings qualitative improvements to the service stack, the part that installs Windows updates. Service Stack Updates (SSU) ensures that there is a robust and reliable service stack for devices to receive and install Microsoft updates.
